EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
