An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid talking about classified information in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Context
The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in every areas of government operations, from transport usage to discussions practices.
