Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
