Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
