Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
